There are seven classes of membership of the Institute. They are Honorary Fellows, Life Fellows, Fellows, Members, Graduate Members, Affiliate Members, and Student Members.
Life Fellows, Fellows, and Members shall be Corporate Members of the Institute.
Members of the Institute shall use the abbreviations corresponding to the respective class of member as follows :

All membership applications shall be made on forms approved by the Council and proposed by two corporate members of the Institute, one of whom must certify his knowledge of the applicant. Such application shall be submitted to the Honorary Secretary, who shall table the same before the next following Council meeting for their consideration.
Every applicant shall satisfy the Council that he has fulfilled the requirements prescribed by these Rules and other by-laws which the Council may impose as a condition of membership. He shall produce such evidence of fitness for admission as the Council shall require.
The Council may in their absolute discretion, by resolution passed at a meeting of the Council and without assigning any reason for their refusal, refuse to admit to membership any applicant.
Present and new members of the Institute shall be admitted to the classes of members in accordance to their qualification and experience herein-under specified by the Council whose decision shall be final :
(1) FELLOWS shall be persons who have been transferred or elected into the class of Fellows so long as their names are on the Register as such.
A candidate for transfer or election into the class of Fellows shall be not less than forty years of age and shall possess the following qualifications :
1. He shall be a Member of shall have satisfied the conditions for admission to the class of Members.
2. He shall have at least 15 years of professional experience in the Mineral Engineering Profession of which at least five years ..
- shall be in responsible charge of important Mineral Engineering operations, or
- shall have been a consultant or adviser in the branches of Mineral Engineering provided that the Council shall be satisfied that the training and technical experience of candidate engaged as a consultant or adviser justify such professional status.
- He shall be practising his profession at the time of his application and shall satisfy the Council that he is a fit and proper person to become a Fellow.
3. The Council shall also have power in exceptional cases to elect as a Fellow a candidate whose eminence in science or technology justifies in their opinion his election as a Fellow.
For the purpose of this section a professor or head of a department of the various branches of Mineral Engineering in a university or college which provides a regular course of study leading to a degree or diploma recognized by the Council as exempting from such parts of the Membership examination as they may from time to time direct may be regarded as satisfying the requirements of paragraph (b) above.
(2) MEMBERS shall be persons who have been transferred or elected into the class of Members so long as their names are on the Register as such. All persons whose names are on the Register of Members as Associate Members on the date on which these sections become effective shall be deemed to have been transferred or elected into the class of Members.
A candidate for transfer or election into the class of Members shall be not less than twenty-five years of age and shall possess the following qualifications:
- (i) He shall be a graduate in a branch of Mineral Engineering of a recognized university or college and shall possess two years of professional experience in Mineral Engineering, or
(ii) He shall be in possession of equivalent qualification and professional experience in a branch of Mineral Engineering of at least seven years’ duration, which shall include at least two years of responsible work in Mineral Engineering - He shall be practising his profession at his application and satisfy the Council that he is a fit and proper person to become a Member.
- He shall have passed the Membership Examination of the Institute, provided that the Council may exempt a candidate from the whole or part of the Membership examination if he has passed other examinations approved by them.
For the purpose of this section, a lecturer in the branches of Mineral Engineering in a university or college which provides a regular course of study leading to a degree or a diploma recognized by the Council as exempting from such parts of the membership examination as they may from time to time direct be regarded as being engaged in responsible work in Mineral Engineering.
(3) GRADUATE MEMBERS shall be persons who have been transferred or elected in the class of Graduate Members so long as their names are on the Register as such. All persons whose names are on the Register of Members as Graduate Members on the date these sections become effective shall remain the class of Graduate members.
A candidate for transfer or election in the class of Graduate Members shall be a person who has attained the age of twenty-one years and has graduated in Mineral Engineering from a recognized university or college or has obtained the necessary experience in Mineral Engineering to meet the requirement for admission to Corporate Membership.
He shall be practising his profession at the time of his application and satisfy the Council that he is a fit and proper person to become a Graduate Member
(4) AFFILIATE MEMBERS shall be persons who have been admitted into the class of Affiliate Members so long as their names are on the Register as such.
A candidate for transfer or election into the class of Affiliate Members shall be a person of not less than twenty-five years of age who has been engaged for at least six years in Mineral Engineering or in scientific or technical work in connection with Mineral Engineering but who does not meet the requirements for admission to Corporate Membership. He shall satisfy the Council that he is a fit and proper person to become an Affiliate Member.
(5) STUDENT MEMBERS shall be persons who have been admitted into the class of Student Members so long as their names are on the Register as such.
A candidate for election into the class of Student Members shall be a person not less than eighteen years of age who is being educated or trained for, and who intends to adopt, one or more of the various branches of the profession of Mineral Engineering.
(6) Honorary Fellows may be admitted by resolution of the Council and shall be persons who are not professionally engaged in practice as Mineral Engineers but who appear to the Council to be able to render assistance in promoting the objects of the Institute by reason of their position or their eminence in arts, science or literature, or in matters relating to mineral Engineering. Such persons shall remain Honorary Fellows at the pleasure of the Council and shall not be entitled to vote in General Meetings.
The Council may elect any Corporate Member who has rendered distinguished service to the Institute as a Life Fellow. So long as such person remains a Corporate Member, he shall pay no subscription.
